Book Review: The Way of the Three-Year Old Why by Donnell King

I thought it would take me a little bit to read this book because of my schedule. Instead, I sat down and forgot about everything in the world for the past few hours and read it one sitting.

I would normally read it again before writing a review, but I want to help anyone who is wondering:

  • “Should I read this?”
  • “Will it be good for me?”
  • “Is it going to be worth it?”

YES!

And yes, I shouted that.

I don’t need to know you to know that if you’re reading this post you need and want to read this book.

There’s a magical way this book transports you back to the days when you questioned things in an innocent way instead of a worrisome way.

There’s a unique way it blends fiction and self-development to bring you into the character’s situation while seeing pieces of yourself. Because it’s fiction, you allow yourself to remain distant enough to keep reading and find out what the character does in each chapter. And because it’s self-development you find yourself making notes to circle back to after you’re done reading. (Trust me, you’ll want sticky notes or a notebook next to you as you listen; or to have your highlighters and pens ready as you read.)

Quote from Donn King's book, "The Way of the Three-Year-Old Why".

Warning: When you finish it, you may go back, look at the guidelines, and look around the house for a bullet journal. Your head is likely to be swimming with ideas you’re ready to map out from all those sticky notes and points made.

This book drew me into the characters, and I loved how the story allowed us to consider more than one success (maybe a spoiler; maybe not). I was very happy with how we got to know more than the main character, how we got to know the various locations, and how we got to feel with the characters. It was well written and a wonderful introduction to Donn’s writing if you’ve not read anything from him previously.

I recommend this book highly for anyone who:

  • has lost their flare and can’t find a match
  • feels burnt out by the work that they’ve been doing
  • isn’t sure what’s next in life
  • isn’t able to speak what they’d like to do in life because they’ve been “just getting by” for so long
  • wants to do something other than what they are doing but can’t see how to get there
  • has a dream they’ve packed away in the name of responsibility
  • can’t remember what it felt like to ask “Why” instead of “How”

I believe you’ll find this book to be a treasure map, sharing with you guidelines and dots that bring you to the star in the center.
