Book Review: “The Other Side” by Martha Nino

This book came along at a time in my life when I was wanting and praying for change. After letting my career become my life and it not paying off as promised, I found myself tired and worn out. I was angry with myself about decisions I’d made and how I’d stayed too long so I could make others happy while losing myself. This book allowed me to give myself some grace and see the positive side of things, remind myself that I did what was required to ensure my kids had what they needed, and reminded me it’s never too late to start again.

“The Other Side” is a tiny book with 98 pages of reflections and poetry that are so filled with what you need in this moment that you’ll find it on each page. It’s a perfect beach or fireside read.

Some stories will have you laughing.

Some will have you crying.

Others may have you doing both.

Some will allow you to evaluate your privilege while others may remind you of your lack and the struggle you’re going through – while providing you with encouragement to keep pressing forward because you WILL persevere and triumph if you don’t give up!

You will find Martha inspiring, bold, courageous. You’ll understand the immigrant experience better than you ever knew you wanted to – even answering some of the questions you’ve perhaps been afraid to ask. In her stories and poems, you will understand that what some of take for granted others fight to attain. What some of us throw away or scoff at, others consider treasure worth more than anyone could give them.

This book gave me perspective, many laughs, several cries, and a new outlook that has helped me change my mindset and get focused instead of angry. It’s helped me in the month’s since I’ve read it to change how I looked at myself, the world around me, and how I want to show up for others and for myself to ensure I am a positive influence and not a burnt out mess!

Thank you, Martha, for that gift!

Buy the Book Today

Audible: If you want to hear the story as told in Martha’s voice, you want this version. I recommend buying both this and the paperback, as the book is one that you can read many times. There is something powerful about hearing Martha narrate it though.

Kindle: If you like to conserve trees, the Kindle will work. I love my paper white, but I also like holding books, so I don’t have the Kindle for this book. I opted to get the full immersion with the paperback and then loved it so much I bought the audiobook.

Paperback: If you want to really immerse yourself in Martha’s words, and have to choose only one format, choose this one because there is something special about holding the book and feeling Martha’s heart jump off the pages as you read each word.
